We have been in Sayulita just over two weeks now. The weather has been hot and muggy, warmer than normal.... not that we are complaining.

In the mornings, I've been attending my regular language classes and Linda has been exercising by walking the hills and stairs while practicing Spanish with an iPod app.

We meet up around 11 and take on the onerous task of deciding where will go for lunch... There is a oversupply of restaurants, cafes and taco stands in town. Most have very good food so it's not an easy choice.

There is small turtle reserve on the beach not far from our hotel. When the turtles hatch they collect them, put them in an old cooler and then release them at sunset when there chance of making into the water is the highest.

Both halloween and El Dia de Muertos are celebrated here. The most interesting of the two is the latter. At first glance it appears to be a rather morbid event with pictures and sculptures of skeletons and skulls on display everywhere. But on the contrary, dia de muertos, for the most part, is a happy, family oriented fiesta and celebration of life. An alter to deceased family members is built and articles, food and drink, that were the favourites of the deceased are placed on the alter. The family parties around the alter or in the cemetery. Food, drink, music, and stories of past events continue often all night. The mexican people we spoke to are very proud of this celebration. It is one of the few Aztec celebrations that has continued until today. The catholic church recognized its significance years ago and added its influence to the proceedings.

In the town square a sheet and the presentation of an old black and white horror movie on halloween night.

A couple of views of the beach from basically the same location.

Wednesday, we are heading off on a short motorcycle trip inland to Guadalajara and Guanajuato, 12 days in all. Both of these city's are a a fairly high elevation and the weather is cooler that it is at the coast. More like Fernie summer temperatures. Looking forward to the trip.
