Gaucin

Gaucin, Andalusia is one of the pueblos blancos. The house we are renting is located, in this photo, on the hillside below and to the left of the castle. It's the white one. It's pretty small so you might have trouble picking it out.  The population of Gaucin is just over 2000.  There is a significant English speaking community in town, estimated at 20% of the community.

Looking south from the edge of town.

This photo was taken from the castle, looking north.

The layout of the streets, lanes, and interconnecting stairways make it difficult at first to find your way around.  After spending a couple of days walking around town we are starting find our way around quite easily.

There is an abundance of restaurant's cafes and a good selection of other stores and services.  There is one fairly large grocery store and a hand full of smaller ones. A pharmacy, medical services, hardware stores, etc.   There is no specific business area. The stores and services are scattered all around town.

For visited and residents alike, parking is an issue. The town wasn't designed with cars in mind. There are some designated parking area on some of the wider streets and some residents have garages.  Due to the narrowness of the roads a one way system is essential. It looks like it works well, once you get it figured out.  There are no direct routes. You might have to head south initially to exit the town to the north.

In the photo to the right, this plaza encorporates stairway and ramp access up to the left to the street above. the building in the centre of the shot is cafe / bar / restaurant with outdoor seating in the plaza. This photo was taken on Sunday when it was closed.

Yesterday morning we walked up to the old castle on the hill above Gaucin.  I don't know much about it's history yet but as you can see it in ruins now.  It is quite an easy uphill walk. There is a wide but rough stone path that leads from upper south end of town.

Below are a few picture of rental, Casa Muneca, with the bike parked in lane in front of the house.  The entry door is in front of the  bike and the bike is in front of the bedroom windows.  It's a pretty nondescript house from this angle but it is very nice inside. Perfect for us!

In the spot I have the biked parked, I can't get it turned around without a great deal of effort. The lane is too narrow. Luckily there is a lower exit to this lane.

Kitchen eating area.

The house has a small kitchen with bar-size fridge and 4 burner cook top. As well as all the cooking utensils, pots and pans, dishes etc.

There is a nice eating area inside as well as a table, chairs and shade umbrella on the patio.

The living area is very comfortable. A small desk in the corner, TV, stereo system, a good wifi connection. Even a wood burning fireplace for those cool evenings. We haven't encountered one of these yet.  There is an excellent selection of CD's and movies.
